PILATES FOR SCOLIOSIS, KYPHOSIS & POSTURE ANALYSIS
Pilates for Scoliosis & Kyphosis can be a safe and effective way to manage symptoms, improve posture, strengthen the muscles that support spinal alignment and reduce upper back rounding.
What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a lateral (sideways) curvature of the spine that can also involve rotation. It can cause:
Uneven shoulders or hips
Muscular imbalances
Back pain or tightness
Reduced spinal mobility
How Pilates Helps:
Core strengthening – stabilizes the spine
Postural awareness – helps you identify and correct imbalances
Breath control – supports rib mobility and spinal elongation
Flexibility and mobility – reduces stiffness in tight muscles
What Is Kyphosis?
Kyphosis is an excessive forward rounding of the upper spine (thoracic region). It can result from:
Poor posture (postural kyphosis)
Osteoporosis or vertebral compression
Congenital or structural causes
Common symptoms include:
Rounded shoulders and head-forward posture
Tight chest muscles
Weak upper back and core muscles
Neck or shoulder pain
How Pilates Helps Kyphosis…
Pilates emphasizes spinal alignment, core strength, and body awareness, making it ideal for addressing postural imbalances.
Benefits:
Strengthens upper back (thoracic extensors)
Stretches tight chest and front shoulder muscles
Promotes neutral spinal alignment
Improves breathing mechanics and postural control
Kelly has lived with scoliosis since she was in her adolescence, again with kyphosis as a teen and in her early 20’s, after growing almost a foot tall in a year in high school. Such a drastic growth spurt left behind structural changes and a serious car accident exacerbated the damage to her spine and neck. She has been teaching and doing Pilates for Scoliosis, Hyperlordosis, Kyphosis and performing Postural assessments since she first began her Pilates journey and career. She understands the frustration and pain her clients suffer on a a daily basis living with these conditions.
Beach Pilates & Wellness also offers indepth postural assessments. Contact us to book private sessions or for postural assessments.
